St. Mary’s Preschool Program is well known as a Reggio inspired program. The Reggio philosophy comes from Reggio Emilia, Italy and is renowned throughout the world. St. Mary’s has studied this philosophy and approach to early childhood curriculum since 2001. Staff members have studied in Reggio Emilia, Chicago, Boulder, St. Louis and Tulsa. Dr. Louise Cadwell, author and leading consultant for the Reggio philosophy in the United States, and Dr. Ena Shelley, Dean of the College of Education at Butler provide consultation to St. Mary’s.
The Butler University College of Education partners with St. Mary’s as members of the Indianapolis Reggio Collaborative. St. Mary’s Child Center operates the preschool classroom at the IPS/Butler University Laboratory School. Staff from St. Mary’s are instructors at TEACH Butler, the summer institute for the College of Education.
The staff at St. Mary’s staff teaches educators about the Reggio philosophy and our work. Teachers who have learned at St. Mary’s have come from many schools including: The Children’s Museum preschool, Orchard School, Zionsville Public Schools, Busy Bees public preschool in Columbus Indiana, Head Start and Day Nursery. We have also provided professional development activities for educators who teach at Ivy Tech, Marian University and the University of Indianapolis and their students. In 2009, as we co-hosted the international traveling exhibit from Reggio Emilia with the Indianapolis Reggio Collaborative, over 1500 educators from North America toured our schools.
The mission of St. Mary’s Child Center is to ensure that preschool children who live in poverty will be successful in learning and successful in life. We will continue to live in this mission. 85% of the children we serve will live in poverty. The initiative to serve children for tuition will provide needed revenue to sustain our mission and our ability to serve children in poverty.
In August 2011, St. Mary’s opened a classroom at the IPS/Butler University Laboratory School. For the first time, we enrolled children for tuition. This experience has been incredible as children from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds have worked and learned together. Children, in diverse settings, experience better outcomes in terms of academic success and the development of 21st century skills such as collaboration, adaptability and initiative. .
St. Mary’s Child Center believes in the power of diversity and welcomes the opportunity to serve all children!
